Chicago Police Officer Dies After Shooting

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago police officer died early Tuesday after he was shot while trying to make an arrest on the city's Northwest Side, a police spokeswoman said.

Donald Marquez, 47, was wounded late Monday in the 2400 block of North Avers Street, Officer Alice Casanova said.

"In an attempt to make an arrest, there was an exchange of gunfire and both the offender and officer succumbed," Casanova said.

The suspect who died was not identified. He died at Mount Sinai Hospital, Casanova said.

Marquez was a 20-year veteran of the force who worked out of the 16th District. He died at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Casanova said.
