US Department of Veterans Affairs Police Officer Jose Rodriguez-Reyes was shot and killed Wednesday night at the San Juan, Puerto Rico, VA Medical Center. Officer Rodriguez-Reyes was 53 years old with 18 years of Federal service. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police are investigating the incident. At approximately 7:15 p.m. on April 24, 2002, Police Officer Jose Rodriguez-Reyes was reportedly ambushed by two assailants while working at an outdoor gate at the VA facility. Witnesses reported hearing four shots. Colleagues at the medical center raced to the scene and found Police Officer Jose Rodriguez-Reyes lying on the ground. They rushed him to the emergency room where he died a short time later. "He was a loved man, a family man, grandfather, and very popular among his colleagues," noted medical center Public Affairs Officer Annie Moraza. VA Deputy Secretary Dr. Leo S. Mackay, Jr., was in San Juan at the time visiting VA facilities. "On behalf of President Bush and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Principi, we offer our condolences and prayers for the family of VA Police Officer Jose Rodriguez-Reyes and his colleagues," Mackay said during a 10 a.m. press conference Thursday. "The Department of Veterans Affairs will do everything we can to support Officer Rodriguez-Reyes? family and colleagues."
