HOUSTON, Texas -- as of this month a positive milestone has been reached. The line of duty deaths of police officers nationwide is down sharply. The United States Honor Guard began offering specialized services for law enforcement agencies in November of last year.

Coordinating a nationwide police motorcade to the New Jersey Port Authority memorial services was the launch of the United States Honor Guard. Since then Chris Heisler, National Deputy Coordinator has been assisting agencies across the nation with police funerals and ceremonies.

"We are delighted that business is slow," said Heisler.

"The fact that officer deaths nationwide are down may be reflective to the current high alert status," Heisler added.

Number of Line of Duty Deaths since 1996:

Year July Total

2002 58

2001 64 232

2000 95 156

1999 83 147

1998 106 175

1997 100 179

1996 85 145

The mission is to generate increased public support for the public safety professionals by appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and firefighters, and to provide information that will promote public safety.
