Three Milwaukee Officers Charged in Beating

MILWAUKEE (UPI) -- Three Milwaukee police officers have been charged in the beating of a man who had been suspected of taking a police badge.

Police officers Jon Bartlett, Daniel Masarik and Andrew Spengler have been freed on $5,000 signature bonds.

Frank Jude Jr. was hospitalized for more than two days after the beating. He told investigators a gun was put to his head, a knife to his throat, he was kicked in his groin, kicked in his head repeatedly, had a pen jammed into his ears and his pants and underwear were removed, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Tuesday.

Jude, who is black, said he was stunned the officers weren't charged with hate crimes because he was called a racial slur repeatedly during the beating.

District Attorney E. Michael McCann said everyone who committed crimes might not have been charged yet, noting 10 off-duty officers were at the scene of the beating.
