Australian Constable Killed in Plane Crash

As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peaceā€¦

Constable Sally Elizabeth Urquhart, 28 years, of Bamaga Station in Far North Queensland, Australia, was killed on May 7, 2005 when a commuter aircraft in which she was traveling on duty crashed into a heavily-wooded tropical mountain killing all 15 people on board.

Const. Urquhart, whose fiance, Senior Constable Trad Thornton drove her to the aircraft and kissed her goodbye, was a four-year veteran of the Queensland Police Service. The death of Const, Sally Urquhart struck hard with the 9,000 members of the Queensland Police Service.

Sally's funeral was conducted with full Police honours in Brisbane, the State Capital of Queensland, with more than 600 officers attending. The pain for Sally's family, friends and colleagues was complicated by the four-week delay in formal identification which required DNA processing.

Sally was a great woman, A tremendous Officer, a highly valued colleague and a soulmate to Trad. Their wedding was to be celebrated in September 2005. Our State's Police Service motto is "With Honour we Serve" and our Commissioner, Bob Atkinson, summed up our loss when he said, during his valedictory, "Sal, You served with honour and it was an honour to have served with you.

May Sally Urquhart rest in peace.
