RED SPRINGS, N.C. — A Red Springs police officer shot and killed a Lumberton man after a chase Thursday.

Red Springs police Chief Lum Edwards said Steven Chavis, 33, was shot in the face in Hoke County.

Officer Ricky Brewington was placed on paid administrative leave until the State Bureau of Investigation completes its investigation, which is expected to take about a month.

Edwards said officers started looking for Chavis Thursday afternoon when a woman reported that he pulled her from her car and drove away.

Chavis sped out of Robeson County and into Hoke County with two squad cars chasing him at speeds of up to 90 mph, officials said.

Police said Chavis stalled his car and leaned out of the window, pointing what appeared to be a gun at the officer. Investigators found a nail gun near Chavis' body.

Edwards said he believes Brewington followed police procedures and did nothing wrong.
