Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Officer Down: Deputy Sheriff Dennis Compton - [Walterboro, South Carolina]

Age: 39

Cause of Death: Gunfire

Deputy Dennis Compton was shot and killed while responding to an emergency call on Sunflower Drive, in Smoaks, at approximately 3:00 am.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and remains at large.

Deputy Compton had served with the Colleton County Sheriff's Office for sixteen months, starting as a detention center officer. He is survived by his wife and four children.
