Off-duty N.Y. officer shot in robbery attempt

By Michael Frazier

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. — An off-duty New York City police officer was shot yesterday in an attempted street robbery in New Cassel, authorities said.

The unidentified officer, 25, was treated at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and released hours after being shot in the left hand.

The robber wounded the officer about 4 a.m. yesterday as the two struggled on Kinkel Street between Prospect Avenue and Broadway. It was unclear whether the officer was armed. The investigation is continuing.

City police officials referred all questions to the Nassau County Police Third Squad, which is investigating the botched robbery-turned-shooting.

Det. Sgt. Michael Williams, who was the squad's supervising officer yesterday, could not be reached for comment.

According to a news release by Nassau police, the officer was sitting in his parked car on Kinkel Street when an armed man wearing dark clothing approached him. The two men had a physical altercation before the officer was shot.

After the officer was wounded, he drove away, leaving the shooter standing in the street, the police release said.

The gunman escaped empty-handed. Hours after the shooting, police were unable to provide a detailed description of the suspect.

The wounded officer, who has been on the force since January 2006, is assigned to New York City transit duty. His assignment includes patrols of the subway and bus terminals, as well as surrounding areas of the city's transit system, police officials said before declining to comment further.

It was not clear why the officer was in the area at the time of the robbery attempt. Some residents in New Cassel said the officer lives in Queens, but frequents the neighborhood because he knows women who live along Kinkel Street.
