Four arrested for attacking off-duty officer, wife
The Naples Daily News
LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Four people were arrested on Sunday after authorities said they attacked an off-duty police officer and his wife after a traffic accident.
Around 6 p.m. on Sunday Eric Burton, a Lee County Port Authority Officer, and his wife Jennifer Burton were driving north on State Road 29 when a green BMW traveling at a high rate of speed approached from behind, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office reported. The BMW passed Burton at a high rate of speed and almost hit Burton’s front bumper. The driver of the BMW then hit his brakes in the middle of the road and Burton bumped him, an arrest report said.
Burton identified himself as an officer to the driver of the BMW, Torres, and to the three passengers, authorities said. Torres told Burton he was not impressed. About 10 minutes later, while waiting for deputies to arrive, Torres suggested they just exchange information instead of waiting.
When Jennifer Burton attempted to take a photograph of the damage with her cellular telephone, Braga and Barrosso attempted to block her view. One of the women then called Jennifer Burton a derogatory name, the arrest report said. When Jennifer Burton told the woman not to talk to her like that, the woman pushed her down and both women began hitting her and pulling her hair, authorities said.
When Eric Burton made it to the other side of the car all four of the BMW passengers were hitting his wife and pulling her hair, he told a responding deputy. Eric Burton then jumped in and the four BMW passengers began fighting with him, the arrest report said.
Eric Burton was able to break up the melee by going in the passenger side of his car and retrieving his holster and gun, the arrest report said.
