Off-duty Calif. officer stops three men who vandalized his car
By Lisa Fernandez
Mercury News
FREEMONT, Calif. — Three Fremont men picked the wrong car to egg on Halloween night, according to police.
While parked in a green minivan, three 21-year-olds allegedly threw an object - believed to be a gooey egg - at an off-duty San Jose police officer's 2005 Mercedes. The object cracked the windshield, and the trio were arrested on felony vandalism charges, Fremont Police Sgt. Chris Mazzone said today.
How does an egg crack a windshield and cause more than $400 in damage?
Maybe it was frozen, quipped Mazone, although other police officers have seen eggs cause significant damage if they hit the glass in a certain way.
Fremont police won't identify the San Jose officer, saying it's policy not to name victims. In this case, the off-duty officer was driving his car about 9:40 p.m. Halloween night when he heard a crack on his windshield.
Police said he spotted three young men parked across the street in a church parking lot at 39700 Mission Blvd. They took off, and the off-duty officer started following them, Mazzone said. He caught up with van on Stevenson Boulevard at Guardino Drive, and told them to pull over, identifying himself as a police officer.
He also called Fremont police by cell phone, who arrived and booked the suspects. Arrested are: Roham Patel of Newark, and Munir Ahmad and Amit Bhagia, both of Fremont.
Was it a Halloween prank gone awry?
"When you're 21, you're done with pranks," Mazzone said.
