Colo. man arrested after off-duty cop's car is rammed

The Colorado Gazette

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man was arrested early today after allegedly ramming a car driven by an off-duty police officer, then threatening him with a knife.

Colorado Springs police said officer Mark Riley was heading home around 3:20 a.m. when, at North Academy Boulevard and North Carefree Circle, he was nearly hit by a car driven by Eric Earl Mattyasovsky, 21. Police said Riley was in plain clothes and in his personal vehicle.

Police said Mattyasovsky rammed Riley’s car on purpose, and Mattyasovsky then got out of his car and threatened the officer with a knife. When other officers arrived, a brief standoff ensued, and Mattyasovsky then cut his own neck and wrists in a suicide attempt, police said.

Mattyasovsky was subdued and arrested on suspicion of menacing, criminal mischief, interference with law enforcement and reckless endangerment.

Police said he was angry over an incident earlier in the night when he got in a fight with his girlfriend. Police had been called, but no arrests were made.

It was unclear if Riley had been part of the police response to the earlier incident.
