Robbery suspect nabbed by off-duty N.J. officer

NEW JERSEY — An off-duty cop walking his dog collared a suspect in a "wolf-pack" robbery, police reports said.

Two teen-age boys were walking on Kennedy Boulevard between Van Houten Avenue and Stegman Parkway around 11:15 p.m. Friday when they were approached by a large group of teenagers, the boys later told police.

Feeling intimidated, the pair ran into the vestibule of an apartment building, but the group of five to eight boys forced their way into the building and beat the 15-year-old, knocking him to the ground and kicking him repeatedly.

The group grabbed an MP3 player and then ran away.

Off-duty police officer Eric Tavarez, who was walking his dog in the area, saw the group of teenagers running and grabbed one of them, a 15-year-old boy, police reports said.
