CHARLOTTE, N.C. An off-duty police officer is in the hospital with a skull fracture after he was dragged by a car while chasing a man suspected of stealing bottles of cologne from Walgreens.

Officer Hakeem Peterson is at Carolinas Medical Center in fair and stable condition after the early-morning incident. His injuries a fractured skull, several cuts to his face and body and a concussion are not life-threatening.

Peterson was working off-duty at the Walgreens at South Boulevard and Woodlawn Road at about 1:40 a.m. when a man walked into the drug store and stole what police called a large quantity of cologne. The man ran from the store and Peterson gave chase, grabbing the man through the lowered passenger side window of a four-door sedan.

The car, driven by a second suspect, sped off dragging Peterson, who's been a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer for a little over two years.

Police encourage anyone with information on the assault to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Mario Soares at 704-353-1751.

Officers say the car was a dark 4-door sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus, Hyundai or a Nissan.

They said the fiirst suspect was a black man with a dark complexion. He was about 20 years old and between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10. During the robbery, he was wearing a white Nike baseball cap with a dark brim and a dark-colored Nike swoosh on the front. He was also wearing a dark green jacket over a dark shirt with a white design on the front and blue jeans.

Officers had only a vague description of the second suspect.

As of October, the latest day for which officer assault statistics were available, 212 CMPD officers had been assaulted in the line of duty.

The assault on Peterson was the fourth time an officer has been seriously attacked in Mecklenburg County this year. The others:

• On March 31, CMPD Officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton were fatally shot at an east Charlotte apartment complex after responding to an unrelated domestic situation. Demeatrius Montgomery, of Charlotte, has been charged in the murders.

• On Oct 10, CMPD Officer Jim Fox received serious head injuries after a man he was trying to arrest hit him over the head several times with the officer's own flashlight. Fox was serving an outstanding warrant for larceny on 24-year-old Karl Alexander Untz, who was also charged with assault on an officer inflicting serious bodily injury. Fox made a full recovery.

• Alcoholic Beverage Control agent Robert Bates was shot in the leg after he and another officer helped break up a fight at a south Charlotte nightclub on Oct. 12. The club's bouncer was also shot, though neither man's injuries were life-threatening. A man involved in the fight was shot and killed.
