Off-duty Chicago officer seriously hurt in crash

Tribune staff report

CHICAGO, Ill. — An off-duty Chicago police officer is hospitalized today with serious injuries after a crash Christmas Eve on the Dan Ryan Expressway, police said.

About 11:30 p.m., the 43-year-old male officer was driving southbound in the express lane near 43rd Street on the South Side when he struck a tow truck, said State Police Sgt. Gregory Coate.

The truck was parked on the left shoulder, but Coate said it's unclear whether the truck might have been sticking out into the express lane. The truck driver, who was repairing a flat tire on another vehicle, was injured and taken to a local hospital.

The officer was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital with two broken arms, two broken legs, a broken pelvis and severe blood loss, Coate said. He was driving alone in a 2005 Mercedes.

The cause of the accident is undetermined, Coate said.
