Off-duty Pa. officer found shot after crash
By Kathleen Brady Shea
The Philadelphia Inquirer
UPPER DARBY, Pa. — Police continue to investigate the unusual circumstances surrounding the shooting of an off-duty Upper Darby Police officer early this morning.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. said Officer Jerome Brown, 30, was in stable condition this afternoon after undergoing surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
He said officers found Brown unconscious in his 2000 red BMW, which had smashed into an overhead light standard at the M&T Bank after striking a 1999 Ford pickup truck. The occupant of the truck was not injured, Chitwood said.
Medics administering to Brown observed the gunshot wound, and investigators found a Glock 9mm handgun in a holster on the front passenger's seat floor, Chitwood said. He said the gun, which had been fired once, was an off-duty weapon registered to Brown.
"Our investigation is continuing to determine the cause of the gunshot wound," said Chitwood. "At the moment, we're not looking for any fugitives; nobody was seen running from the car."
He said investigators were looking at the possibility that the gun fired during the impact of the crash, or that the shooting occurred earlier, outside the vehicle.
Chitwood described the crash as "significant," adding that Brown's vehicle spun around in the icy conditions and was probably totaled.
He said Brown, who joined the department in 2000, was still recovering from surgery.
"Until we can interview him and match what he says with the physical evidence, we can't say what happened," Chitwood said.
In the meantime, Chitwood said, the department's thoughts and prayers are with Brown and his family.
Brown received publicity in 2005 when The Inquirer reported that Vincent J. Ficchi, the former Upper Darby police superintendent, had quashed a 2003 drunken-driving arrest by Brown.
Ficchi resigned after a no-confidence vote by his officers.
