Off-duty NY police officer beaten with folding chair

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Two off-duty police officers walking along a Manhattan street have been jumped by a group of men who bashed one of them over the head with a chair.

Police say the officers and a cousin of one of them were in the Washington Heights neighborhood early Friday when five men approached them.

They say one of the men exchanged words with an officer and started a fist fight with him before pulling a wooden folding chair from a nearby pile of trash and hitting him.

Police say the armed officer shot the man in the neck.

That man and two more are in custody. Two others are being sought.

Police say one of the men stole a cell phone from an officer during the melee.

They say the officers and the man who was shot weren't badly injured.
