NEW YORK — The manhunt for Aleksander Vacaj is over.
The suspect who, police believe, hired others to carry out the brutal slashing of his ex-girlfriend in Chinatown has been arrested in New Jersey, holed up in a basement.
"He was hiding like a cornered rat," said Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire.
Vacaj, 32, was arrested in Garfield, N.J., Tuesday night and was being held late yesterday in Bergen County pending an extradition hearing back to the city. There, detectives want to question him about his involvement in the attack May 28 on his ex-girlfriend, an attack cut short when off-duty NYPD Det. Martin Carrano intervened and shot the two attackers, killing one and seriously wounding the other.
Vacaj, detectives believe, hired both men to "Frankenstein" his ex, Artende Gjeli, 26, cutting her face with a razor and slashing her about the body with a broken beer bottle. For now, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, Vacaj faces charges connected to threatening phone calls.
Three weeks ago, Gjeli, of Lodi, N.J., filed a harassment complaint at the 114th Precinct in Queens, accusing Vacaj of slapping her in an Astoria restaurant. When she showed up May 28 at the Chinatown condo where she works as a receptionist, Vacaj bombarded her with threatening phone calls, police said.
Frightened, Gjeli called the 114th Precinct and Carrano told her he would respond after his shift. It's not clear if he notified a supervisor that he was going to see her after his shift ended. Minutes after he got to the condo, Eugene Morales and Andres Camue Martinez, both 22, entered the building and asked about the cost of a room, police said.
When Gjeli told the men they were not in a hotel they pounced, police said, attacking her and Carrano. But Carrano pulled out his gun and opened fire, killing Morales and wounding Martinez, police said.
Gjeli, meanwhile, needed 23 stitches to close her wounds and Carrano, sliced on the back of his head, needed three staples to repair his wound.
On Tuesday afternoon, the NYPD and U.S. Marshals found out through tips where Vacaj was, called New Jersey authorities and moved in, just past 7 p.m., on a three-family home on Pierre Avenue, in Garfield.
