Off-duty Wisc. officer murdered in double shooting

JEFFERSON, Wisc. — Police late Sunday continued to investigate a shooting outside a downtown Jefferson tavern that killed a Town of Oconomowoc police officer and a male friend.
Police officials announced that they had arrested a male suspect in the double shooting but provided few other details of the incident, which occurred early Sunday.
Jefferson police did not identify either of the victims, but Town of Oconomowoc police identified the slain officer as Jennifer Luick, a six-year veteran with the department.
The shootings occurred outside the Rock Bottom Saloon, 123 W. Milwaukee St., around 1:25 a.m. Sunday. Luick was off duty at the time. She died at a local hospital, police said.
The second victim was taken by helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, where he died, police said.
"It's been a long time since we had a homicide in Jefferson," Jefferson Mayor Gary Myers said. "This kind of thing doesn't happen here. It's a very tragic situation."
A male suspect in the shooting was arrested with the assistance of the Fort Atkinson Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Jefferson police said.
Luick has an 11-year-old son.
Chris Wizner, a patrol officer with the Village of Oconomowoc Lake Police Department, said he had met Luick when she was a part-time officer with the village before she took the full-time job with the town.
She was a dispatcher with the City of Oconomowoc Police Department before becoming an officer, he said.
"Her ideal day was taking care of her horses," Wizner said. "She stood up for herself. She was tough."
