(HACKENSACK, N.J.) - A city man faces charges that he attacked an off-duty police officer at an auto storage yard.
Elvyn Gonzalez, 29, of Ryerson Avenue allegedly punched Detective Frank Motta, 44, in the face over the weekend at Classic Tow Yard on 21st Avenue.
Gonzalez showed up at the tow yard shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday to retrieve his car, which had been towed earlier, police said.
After Motta, in civilian clothes and working as a dispatcher at the tow yard, left a trailer to show Gonzalez where his car was, the suspect punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground, police said.
The men began wrestling on the ground. Motta called for help with his police radio, and patrol units responded and assisted in subduing Gonzalez, who police said was violently resisting arrest.
Motta suffered facial injuries and was treated at Barnert Hospital and released. Gonzalez was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center for his injuries, and released.
Gonzalez was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest, police said. .
