Indiana Officer will be remembered

Officer Down: Jason Scott - [McCordsville, Indiana]


Biographical Info

Age: 34

Additional Info: Sgt. Scott had been with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department for eight years. He leaves behind a wife and a 7-year-old daughter.

Incident Details

Cause of Death: It is believed that Sgt. Scott suffered a blood clot that interrupted heart function and resulted in his death

Date of Incident: August 5, 2005


Sgt. Jason D. Scott, 34, McCordsville, IN, died Aug. 5 at the Indiana Heart Hospital, Indianapolis, after his wife discovered him collapsed at their home about 5:45 a.m. on Aug. 3. He never regained consciousness. It is believed that he suffered a blood clot that interrupted heart function and resulted in his death.

He was a Sergeant and 1st Shift Supervisor in the Jail and Communications Division of the Hancock County (IN) Sheriff's Department. He had been with HCSD for eight years.

Prior to that, he had been a Reserve Officer with the McCordsville Police Department and a member of the Fountaintown (IN) and Greenfield (IN) fire departments. He also had earned EMT certification. He began in law enforcement at the age of 12-13 as part of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department's Cadet Program and studied criminal justice at Vincennes University on a law enforcement scholarship.

Off-duty, he was an avid military collector and living historian specializing in the World War II and Old West periods.

Full HCSD law enforcement services were conducted Aug. 9 at Pasco-Stillinger Funeral Home in Greenfield, IN.

He is survived by his wife Mandy and 7-year-old daughter Peyton. Other survivors include his mother Nancie Waltz and step-father Mike Waltz of Madison (IN), father Dave Scott and step-mother Beth Ray-Scott, his paternal grandmother Margaret Scott, uncle Jim Scott and step-brother Alex Ray and step-sister Abby Ray, all of Greenfield.
