Ark. trooper accidentally killed by fellow officer after chase

Incident Details

Cause of Death: Trooper Carthron was struck and killed by another trooper's crusier while picking up spike strips he deployed during a chase.

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. - Arkansas State Police say a trooper and has been struck and killed by a colleague.

Authorities say Trooper Mark Carthron of West Memphis was picking up a spike strip on Interstate 40 about 6:30 p-m yesterday when he was hit by a cruiser driven by state police Corporal Lowry Astin of Forrest City.

Carthron had been a trooper for about eight years. He was pronounced dead early today at a hospital.

The spike strip had been deployed near West Memphis to stop a robbery suspect.

An internal investigation into the death has begun.
