Texas deputy drowns in attempt to rescue Marine

Cause of Death: Sgt. Galloway drowned while attempting to rescue struggling swimmers from the Trinity River.

A San Jacinto County deputy constable died Thursday evening while attempting to save a struggling swimmer in the Trinity River, authorities said.

Sgt. Denny Galloway, 34, was unable to reach the swimmer, a young Marine who recently returned to Texas from a tour in Iraq, said Precinct 2 Constable Jerry Everitt.

"Denny Galloway died a hero today," Everitt said Thursday night. "He didn't hesitate to think about his safety at all."
