Additional Info: Officer Rob Targosz was the first officer killed on duty in the Gilbert department's 86-year history. He was a 12-year veteran, and he was named Gilbert's officer of the year in 2003. He is survived by his wife.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A veteran Gilbert police officer died early Sunday of injuries he received when his motorcycle was struck by a car driven by a Tempe man, police said. Court documents show that the suspect in the accident has a history of traffic and alcohol violations.

Officer Rob Targosz, 37, died of multiple injuries. He was the first officer killed on duty in the Gilbert department's 86-year history.

Targosz was in police uniform when the collision occurred about 6:25 p.m. Saturday at Apache Boulevard and Price Road in Tempe. At the time of the crash, he was on his way to work a DUI detail.
