Police: NC cop slain trying to arrest Iraq vet

As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

Police: NC cop slain trying to arrest Iraq vet

Officer Down: Rick Rhyne - [Vass, North Carolina]

Associated Press

VASS, N.C. — Authorities say a North Carolina deputy sheriff has been shot and killed trying to arrest an Iraq war veteran, who then took his own life.

Moore Sheriff Lane Carter said Thursday that Deputy Richard Rhyne had spoken to the suspect and determined he had an outstanding arrest warrant for not paying child support.

Carter said the suspect, Martin Poynter, pulled out a gun and fatally shot Rhyne and then shot himself outside an abandoned home near Vass, which is 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.

The sheriff said the 58-year-old Rhyne was investigating a trespassing complaint when he encountered Poynter and his brother. He spoke to the men, checked their names and was about to take Poynter into custody when he was shot.

Rhyne had been in law enforcement for 37 years and a Moore County deputy since 2007.
