Calif. cop paralyzed in '85 shootout dies

Officer Down: Anthony Giniewicz - [Signal Hill, California]

By PoliceOne Staff

SIGNAL HILL, Calif. — An officer died Wednesday when he succumbed complications from gunshot wounds sustained after a shootout that happened more than 20 years ago.

In the 1985 incident, Signal Hill Police Officer Anthony Giniewicz and another officer were eating with a dispatcher and Giniewicz's wife when three gang members assaulted the other officer as he was leaving, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Officer Giniewicz went outside to assist and the suspects immediately opened fire, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down as a result of severe wounds.

Officer Giniewicz had his family by his side when he passed, according to the Signal Tribune, and police reflecting on his life say he was a hero who did everything he could to assist a fellow officer in need.

“Although Tony was off-duty when he was injured in 1985, he quickly responded to the situation and engaged the robbery suspects before being shot,” Signal Hill Police Chief Michael Langston said. “We will always be grateful to Tony for his selfless actions serving the community."
