As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

Suspected drunken driver kills W.Va. deputy

Officer Down: Michael May - [, West Virginia]

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A suspected drunken driver killed a Monongalia County deputy sheriff during a pursuit that began in West Virginia and ended in Perry, Greene County, early Saturday, according to state police.

Sgt. Michael T. May, 41, was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. State police took Jerod A. Green, 35, of Morgantown, into custody on charges including homicide by vehicle while driving drunk; state police said he was still being questioned at 10:15 a.m. and had not been formally charged or arraigned.

Pennsylvania state police said state police in West Virginia were investigating a hit-and-run accident around 12:50 a.m. near Morgantown, and believe Green's truck struck another vehicle.

Nearly 20 minutes later, Granville, W.Va., police said they spotted Green driving on Route 100, and pulled him over; Monongalia deputies assisted.

Green appeared drunk, according to police; he refused to get out of his vehicle, and instead drove away, with police and deputies pursuing.

Green drove into Greene County on Route 19, and then onto southbound Interstate 79, where he hit May's parked cruiser.

May was a 10-year veteran of the Monongalia sheriff's department, and is survived by his parents and a brother, police said. Monongalia County Sheriff Al Kisner was not immediately available for comment this morning.
