Ariz. deputy dragged by truck dies 9 years later
Officer Down: David Wargo - [Phoenix, Arizona]
By PoliceOne Staff
PHOENIX, Ariz. — A deputy critically injured nine years ago died Tuesday after spending nearly a decade in a vegetative state.
David Wargo, 39, was in his uniform while off-duty in May 2003 when he asked a man in a supermarket parking lot to move his truck. Jose Fortino Grande, 36, sped off while Wargo was holding onto to the truck, dragging the deputy at speeds of up to 50 mph.
According to reports from the incident, Wargo fell from the truck and hit his head on the pavement, leaving him with debilitating injuries that left him unable to speak, The Tucson Citizen reported.
For years the Sheriff's Office raised money for his medical treatment, and after his condition worsened last year, donated $25,000 to assist his widow and children in meeting the high costs.
Wargo will be buried next Tuesday with the full honors of a line- of- duty death. His sacrifices will be remembered in Maricopa County for a long time.
“We lost a brave deputy who put his life on the line in the interest of public safety. He will not be forgotten.” Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement.
Grande was sentenced to 15 years in jail and will be released in 2019. Lisa Wargo said she will not pursue murder charges as it will not bring her husband back to life.
"I’m going to miss him, but at the same time, I’m glad he’s now going to rest,” she said.
