Officer Down: Jose Torres - [Westfield, Massachusetts]
By PoliceOne Staff
WESTFIELD, Mass. — A Westfield police officer was fatally struck while working construction detail, officials said.
Jose Torres, a 27-year police veteran, was hit by a dump truck Thursday morning as he directed traffic. Officers were notified about two hours later that he had died at a Springfield hospital, Capt. Hippolito Nunez said.
Site workers and neighbors told WWLP of their grief at what happened.
"I'd say it's pretty tragic, when you start losing policemen it's tough," Chester resident Roland Marcoulier said.
Several agencies are investigating, including State police and the Westfield traffic bureau.
