La. officer killed in single-vehicle crash

As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

VERNON PARISH, La. — An on-duty Vernon Parish deputy was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Monday.

According to Louisiana State Police, Troop E, 54-year-old Deputy Steven G. Netherland, of Simpson, died in the crash on La. 8, between Simpson and Leesville, east of Calcasieu Loop.

Troopers responded to the crash around 7 a.m.

The crash involved a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. Troopers said the Ford was westbound on La. 8, in a construction zone, when Netherland lost control and crossed the center line.

After crossing the center line, troopers said the vehicle exited the left side of the roadway before colliding with two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer.

Troopers said Netherland was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead.

Troopers said Netherland was a State Trooper for over 22 years and was assigned to Troop E at the time of his retirement.

He was working for the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office as a deputy in the civil division and had been employed for about a year.

"Netherland was highly respected among his fellow law enforcement colleagues, was a model trooper and deputy, always working hard toward our mission of public safety, and was always willing to help a person in need. Steven's dedication, work ethic and eagerness to help will be greatly missed," troopers said in a release.
