Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

Officer Down: Deputy Joshua Thomas Rutherford - [Chinook, Montana]

Mont. Deputy Killed, Another Wounded in Domestic Call

CHINOOK (AP) -- A Blaine County sheriff's deputy was killed and another wounded Thursday night when they answered a domestic disturbance call near Harlem, Sheriff Glenn Huestis said Friday.

Deputy Joshua Thomas Rutherford died at the scene, and Deputy Loren Janis was wounded, the sheriff said.

Janis was taken to a Billings hospital, where a spokeswoman said he had been treated and released.

Laurence Jackson Jr. was arrested and was being held at the Hill County jail in Havre pending formal charges, the sheriff said in a written statement.

State records show Jackson, 25, was convicted of felony assault in 1999. State records also show he is a registered violent offender.

Huestis declined to release any other information about the shooting, saying additional details would be available later.

Havre Police Chief Kevin Olson, who is assisting in the investigation, said the shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday.
