2 Die, 1 Injured In Lafourche Parish Car Crash

As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

LOCKPORT, La. -- Two Lafourche Parish sheriff's detectives were killed when they ran into a truck on their way to rescue an elderly woman who had driven into a canal on Thursday, officials said.

Chaney Champagne, 45, of Lockport and Kurt "Woody" Harrelson, 31, of Raceland both died at the scene at about 3:30 p.m. one mile north of Lockport on state highway 308, said sheriff's spokesman Larry Weidel.

"They were in a patrol unit and they were on their way to Thibodaux to get an arrest warrant when a call came out that an elderly woman had run into a canal and the two detectives were probably the nearest unit to respond, so they took off to respond to that emergency and lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a truck," Weidel said.

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital. Weidel said he was uncertain of the driver's condition. He said the elderly woman was rescued from the canal.

"Both of these young officers were outstanding men in law enforcement and dedicated their lives to law enforcement and they will be sorely missed by the department," Weidel said.

They had been hired by the sheriff's office in the last couple of years, but each had over 12 years of law enforcement experience, Weidel said.
