Police Question Son After Off-duty Chicago Cop Shot to Death

Officer Down: Francis Skroch IV - [Chicago, Illinois]

Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO -- Police Tuesday night were questioning the 14-year-old son of an off-duty Chicago officer who was killed Tuesday outside his home on South Troy Street, according to a department spokesman.

Sgt. Francis Skroch IV, 41, a tactical sergeant in the Grand Crossing District, was shot at least once in the chest around 4 p.m. while standing on the street near his house, said police spokeswoman Alice Casanova.

Skroch, a 16-year veteran, received an award in 1998 after being shot while attempting an arrest in 1997.

A neighbor, Michelle McDonald, said: "It is just a heart breaking situation all the way around. We were just shocked."

Lynn Laurenkus, a waitress at a nearby restaurant, said she saw Skroch lying in front of her car.

"We believe it's a domestic-related situation, and we're talking to his son at this point," said police spokesman Patrick Camden.
