N.C. Sheriff's Deputy Dies in One-Car Accident

Officer Down: John Strickland - [Harnett County, North Carolina]

A Harnett County, N.C. sheriff's deputy died Wednesday morning in the line of duty.

The sheriff's office says John Strickland, 38, was killed in a one-car accident about 8 a.m. on Nursery Road near Highway 87. That's located near the community of Overhills in southern Harnett County.

Investigators said Deputy Strickland was responding to a call when he went off Nursery Road to the right toward Highway 87. He crossed back over the road to the left hit a ditch and then tree.

He was taken to the Betsy Johnson in Dunn where he was pronounced dead. There is no indication as to why he ran of the road.

Strickland joined the Harnett County Sheriff's Office in January 2003 as a part-time Deputy and was promoted to full-time in April 2003.

The State Highway Patrol said that Strickland was married for 15 years. He is the father of three and his father is a retired Harnett County deputy.
