POLK COUNTY, Wis. — A Wis. deputy died Monday, after succumbing to complications stemming from a gunshot wound he received in a shootout with a suspect in 1991.

According to ODMP, Deputy Sheriff Mike Severson of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was shot on April 19, 1991 while attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted for a shooting the day prior.

Another officer, Deputy Sheriff Allen Albee, was killed when the suspect opened fire with a .32 caliber handgun.

Severson suffered a wound to his spinal cord, paralyzing him from the neck down, ODMP reported.

Other deputies returned fire and killed the suspect.

Severson was 27 years old at the time of the attack, CBS Minnesota reported. He was 51 years old at the time of his passing.
