Accident Kills Moody County Deputy Sheriff

Officer Down: Deputy William Davis - [Flandreau, South Dakota]

by Stacy Bauer, KELOLAND-TV News

Law enforcement officers are used to responding to accidents, especially during winter weather. But late Monday afternoon, they were called to a crash involving one of their own.

Just after 4 p.m., Moody County Deputy William Davis died while ticketing a driver on Interstate 29, just north of the Nunda-Ward exit.

Trooper Josh Olson says, "He was placing a male individual under arrest. Another vehicle traveling northbound lost control on the bridge and began to slide, struck the deputy and the deputy was fatally injured."

Davis had responded to an accident in the northbound lane of I-29. This truck hit a bridge and Davis was writing him a ticket for over driving the conditions.

Olson adds, "My understanding was the individual driving the pick up truck was going to be cited and he was refusing to sign the citation so he was going to be placed under arrest for that."

As Davis was arresting the pick up driver along side the interstate, this car slid sideways, slammed into him and killed him almost instantly. Davis, who had been with law enforcement for over 20 years, was thinking about retiring in the next year or two.

The driver of the car, a woman from Illinois, was not hurt. Her husband and two small children who were in the car with her, were also okay.

After the accident, the driver of the pickup, who was not hurt, did sign his ticket. Charges are pending against the driver of the car that hit and killed Davis.
