Sacramento County Police Dog Killed During Car Chase A Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy survived a crash early Saturday morning, but the department says he is emotionally crushed that his canine partner did not make it out alive.
The deputy was pursuing a suspected car thief on Elkhorn Boulevard near Marysville Boulevard when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over multiple times. The depty's dog, Nero, was thrown from the car and later died at a veterinary emergency room.
The department says dogs like Nero are very special and he will be deeply missed. "Unfortunately we do lose the canines, and it is a very tragic situation for the family and the officer," said Lou Fatur, a spokesman for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the wreck. The suspected car thief was later arrested.
