As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Officer Shot While Responding To Robbery In Progress
Officer Down: Santos Silva Laboy - [San Juan, ]
Tactical Operations Division Officer Santos Silva Laboy, 22, from the Puerto Rico P.D. was killed Saturday while responding to a robbery in a shop in the Puerto Nuevo area of San Juan.
Silva, along with Officers John Alvarez Medina and Melissa Escalera Acosta responded to the call and were met by two assailants who had just killed the shop's 78-year-old owner after he confronted them as they attempted to flee the scene.
They opened fire on the police officers hitting Silva in the face and Officer Alvarez in the abdomen. The officers returned fire, killing one of the assailants.
Officers Silva and Alvarez were trasported to a nearby hospital but Silva died from his wounds.
Officer Alvarez was released the same night from the hospital; the bullet hit his vest and probably saved his life.
Another person was detained for questioning in relation to the incident.
