Off Duty S.C. Officer Killed; His Unmarked Patrol Car is Stolen
Officer Down: Captain James Myers - [Orangeburg, South Carolina]
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- An off-duty Orangeburg law enforcement officer was killed in Calhoun County, and police think the suspect stole his unmarked patrol vehicle.
Orangeburg Public Safety Department Capt. James Myers, 56, was found about 9:30 p.m. Sunday by a family member on his property in northwestern Calhoun County, said Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers.
Police think whoever killed Myers also took his white, four-door unmarked 2003 Dodge Ram. The South Carolina license tag is MG-41978.
Police did not say Monday how Myers was killed, but Summers said they are investigating the case as a homicide, according to The (Orangeburg) Times and Democrat.
"I believe it was random act," Summers said.
Investigators say they are looking for 21-year-old Mikal Deen Mahdi, of Richmond, Va. He is accused of carjacking a man at gunpoint in downtown Columbia early Sunday morning. The car was found less than a mile from where Myers was killed in Calhoun County.
The sheriff's office described the suspect in Myers death as a black man, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 160 pounds. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Myers was captain of special operations for the department, where he served for 30 years.
