As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Kansas Sheriff Shot, Killed While Serving Warrant

Officer Down: Matt Samuels - [Eureka, Kansas]


Greenwood County, Kansas Sheriff Matt Samuels was shot Wednesday about six miles north of Virgil, Kansas.



Lt. John Eickcorn, with the Kansas Highway Patrol in Topeka has confirmed that at least two suspects are now in custody. Officials are looking for more suspects now.

While details are sketchy, it is reported that Sheriff Samuels was serving a warrant at the home when he was shot.

Hospital officials have now reported that Samuels died as a result of his injuries.

Samuels had just started his second term as sheriff of Greenwood County in January. His father was a former sheriff.

Samuels was in his early 40's. He was a hometown boy who graduated from Eureka High School.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.
