Ex-Lovington officer charged with murder
The Associated Press
LOVINGTON, N.M. — A former Lovington police officer has been charged with an open count of murder in the shooting death of his father, state police said.
Jake Shirley, 23, was being held Friday at the Lea County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash only bond.
According to state police, the Lovington Police Department responded to the home of Jimmy Shirley, 48, on Thursday night after getting multiple 911 calls regarding a domestic violence incident.
Police found the elder Shirley with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Lea County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Jimmy Shirley and his wife, Brenda, had been arguing at their son's home so Jake Shirley took his mother home. The elder Shirley followed and became angry when he was locked out. He allegedly broke in and hit his wife in the face, and police said that's when he was shot.
