Texas officer appeals excessive force suspension

By Jeff Carlton
Associated Press

DALLAS — Officials say a white Texas police officer shown on dashboard camera video slamming a black handcuffed suspect face first onto a squad car has appealed his two-day unpaid suspension.

A decision on Paris Police Officer Jeremy Massey's appeal is expected next week.

Massey is shown on dashcam video slamming 18-year-old Cornelius Gill into the hood of a police car in November.

The police chief says he took issue with force used by Massey. The officer's attorney says his client acted appropriately.

The arrest was the latest incident to spark outrage in racially charged Paris, about 90 miles northeast of Dallas. The Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party led protests there last year after murder charges were dropped against two white defendants accused of fatally striking a black man with a pickup truck.
