N.C. police shoot man after car chase

By Gerald Witt, News & Record

EDEN- Police here shot and critically injured a man Wednesday afternoon after a car chase through Draper that ended with gunfire .

Antonio Devon Bridges, 22, of Eden, was flown by helicopter several hours later to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for treatment for several gunshot wounds, police said.

The car chase began shortly before 2:30 p.m. and ended minutes later near a factory on New Road when the driver stopped the 2005 Chevrolet and fled on foot, police said.

Meanwhile, in a neighborhood a few hundred yards away, David Reeves was watching TV in his house.

"All of a sudden I hear a bunch of gunshots," he said, "and then I looked out the back door and 10 police were around and a suspect was on the ground."

Reeves said officers shot Bridges about 30 feet from Reeves' back door in a wooded lot surrounded by houses along Knott Street.

Reeves said he heard 20 or 30 shots fired. Other witnesses and nearby neighbors said 12 to 15 shots were fired.

Eden police said Bridges fired a gun first. Police did not say why officers were chasing the car.

Bridges had several gunshot wounds and was in "obvious critical condition," said Kerry Faunce, a spokesman for Morehead Memorial Hospital, where a helicopter carrying Bridges took off from the launchpad about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Police did not release any further information Wednesday evening, but Capt. Danny Gillespie described Bridges' injuries as "not fatal at all."

Eden police Chief Gary Benthin said the State Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation into the car chase because police officers had fired their weapons.

Neither Benthin nor the SBI would give more details about the incident.
