Calif. suspect shot while fleeing, police say

By Demian Bulwa

Fearing he would be dragged to death, an undercover police officer shot and wounded a suspected drug dealer who tried to evade arrest by driving away Saturday afternoon, police said Sunday.

Vallejo officers and others were conducting a sting operation aimed at stores that sell liquor to minors.

About 4 p.m., outside a Bonfare Market on Redwood Parkway, Nathan Lee Saulter, 21, and a second suspect sold marijuana to undercover officers, Vallejo police said. As Saulter drove away, an officer drew his gun and repeatedly ordered him to stop.

Saulter continued to drive and dragged the officer out of the store lot and onto Admiral Callaghan Lane. The officer fired once, striking Saulter in the leg, police said. The car stopped, and the second suspect fled on foot.

Saulter was treated for a gunshot wound and then booked in the Solano County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. The second suspect remains at large. Police declined to identify the officer who injured Saulter.
