A city police officer was shot in the hand and a suspect was critically wounded in a shoot-out between the suspect and two officers during a traffic stop on Kelly Street last night.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. when the two officers pulled over a car near the intersection of Kelly and Hale streets in Homewood. Pittsburgh Police Chief Robert W. McNeilly Jr. said the officers, a sergeant and a patrolman assigned to the Street Response Unit, noticed that the vehicle's steering column was broken, leading them to suspect the car had been stolen.

They ordered the driver to get out of the car and put his hands on the vehicle, Chief McNeilly said. But as officers began their pat-down, the suspect tried to run away.

The officers attempted to use their Tasers to stop the suspect, who wound up on the ground about 30 yards away from the traffic stop. At that point, Chief McNeilly said, the suspect pulled out a gun while he was on the ground.

"As the officers tried to move in to arrest him, he pulled a weapon and fired at the officers. We're not sure how many times," Chief McNeilly said.

One officer was shot in the left hand. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian and was in surgery last night. The other officer was not wounded.

The suspect was shot multiple times, Chief McNeilly said, and was in critical condition last night.
