N.Y. man shot after threating officer with metal bar

By Sophia Chang

A man shot twice in the leg by an off-duty New York police sergeant after threatening the officer with a metal bar in their Queens neighborhood was arrested yesterday on multiple charges, police said.

Talwinder Singh, 20, of 101-58 116th St., in Richmond Hill, was in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center yesterday, police said. The sergeant was not identified.

Singh was charged with attempted burglary, attempted assault, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

About 8 p.m. Friday, the sergeant was sleeping at home when he was awoken by his wife, who heard noises from their front door and feared their house was being broken into, authorities said.

The sergeant went outside to investigate and, seeing nothing, asked another neighbor standing nearby if anything was wrong.

While the two were talking, police said Singh appeared on the street holding a Bullworker, a metal bar with rubber caps and stretching bands on both sides. The Bullworker's intended use is to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles.

Singh chased the sergeant down 103rd Avenue for a block before the officer, armed with a gun, turned around and ordered him to drop the bar, police said. When he did not, the officer shot him once in the leg, then a second time when Singh continued to pursue him.

It was unclear if the sergeant and Singh, who has no prior record, knew each other.

Police said that Singh's landlord has been trying to evict him and his two roommates. At one point the landlord had asked the sergeant for advice on how to handle the eviction, authorities said. But it was unclear if Singh knew about their discussions or if that was the reason he went after the sergeant, police said.
