2 Ohio officers shot, driver of car dead following traffic stop
The Associated Press
The wounded officers, Sgt. Matt Beiser and officer Jeff Duma, were in good condition on Saturday morning at Bethesda North Hospital, spokeswoman Mona Fuqua said. Beiser was shot in the shoulder and thigh, and Duma was hit in the shoulder, Police Chief John Bruce said.
Police dogs found the body of the suspect, Captain David Kelly said. Police declined to say if the fatal shots were self-inflicted or fired by officers.
The confrontation started at 8:30 p.m. Friday in West Chester, about 15 miles north of Cincinnati, when Beiser pulled over a vehicle carrying a driver and two passengers for a traffic violation. He was shot during a brief struggle with the occupants, and the car sped off and crashed about 15 minutes later, Kelly said.
The driver then ran into a wooded area and shot at officers pursuing him, striking Duma. Police returned fire after Duma was wounded, Kelly said.
Police did not release the name of the driver or passengers, who were taken into custody. One passenger broke an ankle in the crash.
