Authorities seek other suspects in shooting death of N.Y. officer

KIRKLAND, N.Y.- Authorities have captured one man and killed another in the shooting death of a decorated police officer who was slain while pursuing jewel thieves, but they believe other suspects are still at large.

Officer Joseph Corr, 30, was shot in the neck Monday while pursuing two men who fled from a jewelry store in New Hartford, in central upstate New York, after an employee called 911 during the heist.

Walter Richardson, 36, who police said was the triggerman, was killed in a shootout with U.S. marshals late Tuesday in Chester, Pa., southwest of Philadelphia, after a daylong manhunt.

The other suspect, John Healy, 46, was caught shortly after fleeing from the store. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder and was being held without bail.

New Hartford Police Chief Raymond Philo said Wednesday that investigators had received information that several other people were also involved in the robbery.

About $1 million worth of watches, loose diamonds and other jewelry was taken in the robbery, according to an audit of the store. Investigators did not say if any of the missing items were recovered.

Authorities declined to say whether they believed the two men were part of a larger operation being investigated by the FBI that has robbed jewelry stores along the East Coast.

Funeral services were to be held Friday for Corr, the married father of a 1-year-old girl.
