Frederick police are investigating the fatal shooting Wednesday night by a police officer of a man suspected of selling drugs to an undercover officer in a Frederick apartment complex.
Shortly after the officer made an arranged buy of what police thought were illegal drugs from a man about 7 p.m., backup police officers approached and attempted to arrest him, according to a news release issued by the Frederick Police Department.
The release said that when confronted by Cpl. Steven Brown, the man tackled the officer, causing Brown to drop his gun. The man then removed a folding knife clipped to Brown's pants and stabbed the officer in the back and an arm, police said.
When other officers arrived as backup for Brown, the man refused to drop the knife while approaching officers in a threatening manner, police said.
One of them, Cpl. Ronald Figgers, assistant supervisor of the drug enforcement unit, fired four shots, hitting Bruce Robert Day Jr., 38, in the chest, shoulder and hand, the release said.
Day was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later. Officer Brown was treated at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown and released.
