Police are searching for a second person, believed to be a woman, in the Thursday shooting of a plainclothes city police officer that apparently occurred during a robbery attempt, a state's attorney's official said yesterday.

Margaret T. Burns, a spokeswoman for the state's attorney's office, said that 20-year- old Jobrey Lodge has been charged with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in addition to attempted murder and handgun offenses in the shooting of Officer Dante N. Hemingway. She could provide no other details about the incident.

Hemingway, 28, who was shot three times in the 2400 block of Wilgrey Court in Westport, remained in critical condition last night at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

"What the public can gain from these charges is that law enforcement has identified another individual who is alleged to have conspired with the defendant to commit attempted murder, armed robbery and robbery," Burns said.

Burns said court officials have said that the other individual is female, but Burns did not identify her.

Hemingway, who works in the organized crime division's vice unit, was on duty when police say he had a confrontation with a man in a public housing complex about 1 p.m.

Hemingway's handgun was missing after Thursday's shooting but was found a few hours later in the neighborhood. Another weapon believed used in the shooting - a .32-caliber revolver - also was recovered.

Lodge, who was wounded in the leg in the midday shootout, is being held at the Central Booking and Intake Center.nicholas.shields@baltsun.com
