4 Boston officers taken to hospital after shooting at suspect

BOSTON- Police fired shots at a man who drove over a busy downtown sidewalk, smashing cars along the way and injuring four officers Tuesday, police and witnesses said.

Details were sketchy on the noontime shooting, just outside a Registry of Motor Vehicles office and a subway station. Witnesses said the driver of the sport utility vehicle was handcuffed.

Adrian Corporan, 30, of Boston was at the registry when he saw police cars box in the vehicle and three officers with guns drawn approached the SUV. Two officers fired, he said.

Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said four police officers were taken to New England Medical Center for treatment, but the extent and type of their injuries was not immediately known.

No one was injured at the motor vehicles office, said Amie O'Hearn, a spokeswoman for the agency.
